Sugaring and Jill Helman

Jill Helman, Esthetician & Body Sugarist

Jill has been passionate about anti-aging since she was in the 4th grade and asked for anti-aging cream for Christmas. Little did she know, it was actually more harm than good at that young age. Now, Jill knows better! For the past ten years, Jill has been professionaly practicing as an Licensed Esthetican and a Body Sugarist for the past eight years. She believes in educating her clients and listening to their goals for their skin while working together on a successful plan.

Here's what Jill has to say:

I like to have fun and that is what life is all about! I’m a great listener and love helping and recommending a solution for your skincare needs. People ask me all the time what Sugaring is and what made me do the switch from waxing.

Body Sugaring Hair Removal is an ancient form of hair removal generating from Egypt and Greece that has been practiced for over hundreds of years. It is an art form and is fascinating to watch! Both women and men reap the benefits of sugaring. At Sweet Skin Spa, we sugar from brows to toes to everything in between. AND we do mean - everything in between. The sugar is made of lemon, sugar, and water. Yum, it’s even edible, prior to application of course! It is a beautiful warm, golden goo - looks a lot like honey.

We mold the sugar in the opposite direction of the hair growth so it seeps in to the hair follicle and then we flick it in the same direction of the hair growth. This helps prevent less hair breakage and ingrown hairs. The sugar attaches to the hair and dead skin, so it also serves as a gentle exfoliant. We have three stages of hair growth and the best time to sugar is when the hair is in the beginning growth stage. The beginning stage is when the follicle is at its most alive stage and just growing through the skin. It is best for the Sugarist and the client to sugar when the hair is 1/8” to 1/4” of growth. Usually three to four weeks after sugaring or two weeks after shaving. When sugaring at this beginning stage of growth it MAY lead to permanency over time, the hair grows back lighter, thinner and finer.

When I first opened Sweet Skin Spa over seven years ago, two people in my life said I should do sugaring. I said, no way! I did not want to learn a new skill, I was so resistant. Well, what resists, persists! I opened my mind and said I would look into it. Once it was shown to me, I signed up for the two day class. Sugaring was hard and awkward. Everything about it is the opposite of waxing. Wow! This is truly an art form and what did I get myself into, I thought. Once lunchtime came around and the instructor, the amazing Lara Olsha, took me aside and said, “You know how I said no one gets sugaring the first time. It takes time to master this skill. Jill, you got it and are the first person I have trained to get it!” That was the motivation and confidence I needed. I’m proud to say that 90% of my business is Body Sugaring!

Stay Sweet, xoxo
